Despite the difference of just one word, they are entirely different. One is a benign tumor formed by the aggregation of melanocytes, while the other is a malignant tumor formed by the cancerous transformation of melanocytes.

Melanocytic nevi grow slowly, often worsen due to sun exposure, do not metastasize, and can appear anywhere on the body, commonly in exposed areas. They are symmetrically shaped, have clear boundaries, uniform color, and are generally less than 5 mm in diameter. They usually cause no subjective symptoms.

Melanoma often grows rapidly and may be associated with a family history of skin cancer, excessive sun exposure, or immunodeficiency. It is prone to metastasis and often occurs in acral areas such as the extremities, ends of the hands and feet, or under the nails. It is typically asymmetrical in shape, has irregular edges, muddy or variegated colors, and is usually larger than 5 mm in diameter.
